This is the most strategic TOFU content play of 2026

Hello Reader!

Okay, so we've talked about how much TOFU content (and its value) has changed over the past year.

Two weeks ago, I said AI is now the guy at the entrance of the market handing you a tidy summary of every identical stall, so you never walk past a single one.

Last week, we saw that play out in the data: ChatGPT likely already knows which brands it's going to name before it runs a search, and the gap between the brands in that query and everyone else was 33x.

Translation: AI has already read the internet. It has gobs of content on every topic, and it's serving that content back before anyone clicks.

So the obvious next question: if the old playbook is broken, where should you put your TOFU dollars right now?

The answer: It's the content with an old, healthy URL that already exists in the SERPs and LLMs.

Refreshed TOFU content is where it's at right now.

Why refreshed content:

  • Google's freshness systems still reward the update, and Ahrefs' own stats article gains traffic and referring domains every time it's refreshed and slips when it isn't.
  • Three in four pages LLMs cite were updated in the last year, and anything older than three years is largely invisible.
  • The old page you refreshed beats the new one you wrote. In the same Seer study, 72% of cited pages looked fresh by last update but only 42% by publish date. More than a quarter of the "fresh" pages were first published two or more years ago. They earned their freshness by being maintained.
  • ChatGPT leans hardest on blogs and guides (nearly half its citations), and 73% of what it cites was updated in the last year. If your own pages are going to get named anywhere, it's there, so your archive's last-updated dates matter most.
  • Staying cited is a maintenance game. Seer found the pages cited every single month for four months straight were established pages kept reasonably current (median update age under six months), not brand new ones. New gets you a spike. Old plus maintained gets you staying power.
  • An old URL already has backlinks, internal links, and indexed history. A new URL has none of that and spends its first few months asking to be noticed.

Added benefits:

  • Refreshed content is cheaper. Same writer, half the hours, no waiting to see if it ranks. You're layering a new take, new data, or SME insight onto authority you already own instead of building both from scratch.
  • It fits last week's point. If ChatGPT decides which brands to name before it searches, the brands with the most current footprint on a topic win. Refreshing keeps that footprint current without republishing the whole library.

We'll get into how to refresh a post to maximize visibility next week.
