Let's get real

This one's for the moms in the group, especially new moms. One of my writer friends tagged me in a LI post this week.

In short, her question was how do you deal with re-entering the workforce as a new mom.

My response:

I feel this in my bones and empathize completely! I think the first thing to remember is that you're not that far behind. Marketing is SO BONKERS right now. Everyone feels behind.

I also think you have the key to success in this statement: "I have ideas. I know I’m good at what I do. I’m excited about the work."
​
You ARE good at what you do and any client would be lucky to have you. It's okay to take a beat--the next client is around the corner.
​
As far as mom guilt, that's real for sure. What helped me the most was RBG's advice. She said motherhood & work were mutually supportive and doing both made her a better lawyer and mom. Her advice was... when you're at work, be 100% at work. When you're at home, be 100% at home.

It's harder as a freelancer--especially the first few years. But, humans thrive when they're well rounded. We're better moms because we have professions. Your kid gets to grow up seeing you be a bad ass writer AND feeling your love. That's rad.

So my 2 cents is give yourself grace. It's okay to slowly reenter the industry after you've done one of the most important and awesome things a human can do. And, remember, all marketers are just running around right now like chickens with our heads cut off.
